Cars can be a major pain. Filling the gas tank, paying for insurance, tabs, repairs, oil changes, new tires, and other expenses quickly add up. Plus, dealing with traffic, bad weather, flat tires, and other obstacles on the road all take up so much extra time. Imagine how much time you could save if you decided to ditch your car permanently, or even half of the time. If you live in an area where public transportation, biking, walking, or carpooling is readily available, ditch your car for at least a day and take part in World Car Free Day on Sept. 22.
A Day Without Vehicles
On Sept. 22, people around the world make the environmentally-conscious decision to go without cars for a day, or even longer. World Carefree Day is a day to showcase how our cities and streets might look, feel, and sound without the constant noise and pollution of vehicles surrounding us.
There are plenty of events taking place around the world on Sept. 22, but feel free to register your own event if you don’t see one in your area. The goal is to host an event in as many places as possible so that everyone can learn about the importance of World Car Free Day. Check out these resources and links for tips and ideas for creating your own event. WorldCarFree.net suggests targeting the following groups of people:
Families who use their cars for leisure
Bike owners who don’t actually ride their bikes
Shop owners and retailers
People who own cars
Potential car buyers
WorldCarFree.net also suggests using the following topics to encourage people to ditch their cars on World Car Free Day:
Quality of life
Less air, noise, and visual pollution
Lack of exercise due to using cars for transportation
Health and wellness
Readily available public transportation
How going carless can be cost-effective
Ditch Your Car For Good
Whether you participate in World Car Free Day for an entire day, an entire week, or for good—you’ll be glad you did. If you do choose to ditch your car permanently, then consider donating your car to Wheels For Wishes. Wheels For Wishes recycles your car, truck, boat, motorcycle, or camper, and uses the earned proceeds to benefit your local Make-A-Wish chapter.
If you’ve decided to ditch your car in honor of World Car Free Day but still need a vehicle in order to get around, then maybe you’ll consider upgrading your vehicle to a more environmentally-friendly make or model. Check out our infographic which compares and contrasts a 2008 Toyota Camry and a new 2015 Toyota Camry. If you live in an area where public transportation is readily available, going car free is extremely encouraged.
To donate your car and allow it to be recycled and reused, please call Wheels For Wishes at 1-877-431-9474 or fill out our online car donation form. Donations are also tax-deductible! For more information about how vehicle recycling benefits the environment, check out this blog post.
