Summer is all about fun in the sun, but too much time in the light can be dangerous. July is UV Safety Awareness Month—a time to learn about the steps we can take to protect ourselves from harmful sun exposure.
UV-A and UV-B rays emitted from the sun can cause damage to skin and eyes.
UV-A rays can reach the middle layer of your skin.
Skin cancer has been known to be caused by harmful UV rays and severe sun burns.
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer.
Every year, about 3.3 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer.
Although enjoying the sun offers benefits like Vitamin D, unprotected exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer and aging of skin while also damaging your vision and immune system.
Just as UV rays can be damaging to our skin and eyes, they can also have negative effects on vehicles. The sun can damage the engine, interior, tires and paint of your car.
UV Safety Awareness Month is the perfect time to review the actions needed to prevent sun damage on ourselves and our cars.
Stay covered in the shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is its most dangerous.
Apply about a palmful of at least SPF 15 sunscreen every two hours.
Cover your eyes by wearing sunglasses that resist UV rays.
Shield your skin by wearing clothing that covers your body and a hat to provide shade.
Protect Your Car
Keep all liquids at optimal level (oil, coolant, transmission fluid, etc.).
Place a panel that reflects the sun on your dashboard behind your windshield.
To avoid a blowout, check your tire pressure on hot days.
Park in the shade.
Wash your car with wax.
