Do You Have to Disclose Problems When Donating a Car?

September 30, 2026

If your car has a check engine light, a slipping transmission, a leak, or damage from a past accident, you don't need to fix it or hide it before you donate it to Wheels For Wishes. Telling us what's actually wrong is one of the most helpful things you can do.

Call 1-855-278-9474 or fill out our online donation form to get started today.

  • Free towing: We come to you, anywhere in the U.S.
  • Great tax deduction: Fully registered IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
  • Convenient donation process: Our team guides you through every step.
  • Most vehicles accepted: Running or not, case-by-case basis.

A Known Problem Doesn't Disqualify Your Donation

A Known Problem Doesn't Disqualify Your Donation

Warning lights, transmission trouble, engine problems, fluid leaks, electrical faults, prior accident damage: none of these rule out a donation. We accept most vehicles in most conditions on a case-by-case basis, and vehicles are processed as-is once they're picked up.

Telling us about a problem up front doesn't change whether we can take your car. In most cases, it doesn't change anything about the outcome at all. It just changes how smoothly the process goes.

Why Accurate Condition Information Matters

Why Accurate Condition Information Matters

When you describe your vehicle's condition accurately, our team can confirm whether we're able to accept it and send the right equipment for pickup. A vehicle that won't start needs a different kind of tow than one that drives onto the truck under its own power, and a flatbed shows up for one and not the other.

Our team also inspects every vehicle once it arrives, so a problem you didn't mention will still be found. There's no advantage to leaving it out, and mentioning it upfront just means pickup day goes the way you expect.

What Donors Usually Ask About

  • Check engine or warning lights: Let us know which light is on, if you know. It doesn't affect whether we can accept your vehicle.
  • Transmission or engine problems: Tell us if the vehicle drives, doesn't drive at all, or makes unusual noises. This helps us plan the pickup correctly.
  • Leaks: Mention any fluid leaks you've noticed. Our tow team appreciates knowing in advance.
  • Electrical issues: A dead battery, faulty wiring, or non-functioning components are all fine to mention and don't disqualify your donation.
  • Prior accident damage: Let us know if your vehicle has been in an accident. We accept most vehicles with accident history on a case-by-case basis.
