How Car Donation Tax Deductions Work
Prior to January 2005, the IRS allowed car donors to claim a tax deduction based on their vehicle's market value regardless of the actual sale price. Since January 2005, the IRS now bases the deduction on the actual sale price of your donated vehicle — removing the guesswork and making the process cleaner for donors.
The IRS Allows The Following Car Donation Tax Deductions:
- If your donated vehicle sells for less than $500, you can claim the fair market value of your vehicle up to $500 — no additional paperwork required.
- If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, you can claim the exact amount for which the vehicle sold. We will provide IRS Form 1098-C with everything you need.
For any vehicle selling for more than $500, the exact sale price will be stated on your notification mailed to you. For additional information, the IRS provides IRS Publication 4303 — A Donor's Guide to Car Donations, which details how the value of your donated vehicle is determined. Our team is happy to answer any questions — call 1-888-689-9474 any time.
Four Simple Categories For Your Car Donation Tax Deduction
- Vehicles selling for less than $500 can be claimed at fair market value up to $500 — no extra paperwork needed.
- Vehicles selling for more than $500 require a 1098-C form or an 8283 form to claim the exact sale price.
- Deductions between $500 and $5,000 require a 1098-C form or 8283 form, Section A.
- Deductions over $5,000 require a 1098-C form or 8283 form, Section B, with a written appraisal.
Per the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004, specific documentation and record keeping is required when donating non-cash items including vehicles.

Frequently Asked Car Donation Tax Questions
The information below is intended to provide general information only and is not intended to be tax advice. Please consult your accountant, advisor, or tax preparer for guidance specific to your situation.
Q: How Do I Get My Tax Receipt?
- After pickup, a preliminary tax receipt is automatically sent to your email. This is all you need if your vehicle sells for less than $500.
- A hardcopy receipt is mailed within a week of your vehicle's sale.
- If your vehicle sells for more than $500, an updated receipt with the sale value is sent within a week of sale (which can take up to 8–10 weeks to complete at auction). A perforated slip for your Social Security number will be included so we can mail your IRS Form 1098-C. You may also call us directly if you prefer not to mail your SSN.
- Your preliminary receipt is emailed with the subject line Your Car Donation Preliminary Tax Receipt — check your spam or junk folder if you do not see it within 1–2 weeks of pickup.
- If you have not received your receipt, call 1-888-689-9474 any time and we will send a new one right away.
Q: Will My Vehicle Donation Count For The Year I Submitted The Form, Even If I Receive The Receipt In The New Year?
Yes. IRS Publication 4303 states that the date of contribution is the date the donation form was received — even if that is December 31st. Your donation counts for that tax year.
Q: Does My Donation Count For The Year I Submitted The Form Even If Pickup Happens In The New Year?
Yes. The date of contribution is the date your donation form was received, not the pickup date.
Q: Some Charities Offer Vacation Packages For Vehicle Donations — Does That Affect My Deduction?
Yes. If a charity provides something of value in exchange for your donation — like a vacation package — the fair market value of that item must be subtracted from your deduction. For example: if your vehicle sells for $1,000 and you receive a vacation package worth $400, your maximum deduction is $600. Wheels For Wishes does not offer incentive packages, so this does not apply to your donation with us.
