Travel Wisconsin On a Budget
Often times people put off trips because they are nervous of the dent it will put in their wallet. There is no reason, however, that you cannot have a fun and memorable time while also being budget savvy. With these tips you can get the experience and enjoyment you expect from a vacation without clearing your bank account.
Take a road trip
Even though gas prices are at a national high this summer, if you pack a car full of your friends or family and split the cost of gas, you are still saving a ton of money on plane tickets. When you drive to your location instead of flying as well, you save on the added transportation costs of getting around in the destination city. Instead of having to rent a car or pay for public transportation, you can use your own vehicle.
Visit the Capital
Take a trip to the land of the badgers: Madison, Wisconsin. In Madison you can tour the inside of the capital and the beautiful art it houses. Surrounding the capital is the campus of UW-Madison. Since it is a college town, there are tons of options for cheap dining and entertainment. Visit some local favorites such as Sunroom Cafe, Husnus, and Tutto Pasta, and after enjoy some dessert at the Madtown favorite Paciugo for some creamy gelato! (You are on vacation after all, so calories don’t actually count…)
If you are there on a Saturday, and Wednesdays during the summer, you will not want to miss the Dane County Farmers’ Market taking place just on the perimeter of the capital. Get samples and organic fair of locally grown fresh produce and sweets.
There are tons of fun theme parks and attractions at the Wisconsin Dells, just a two-hour road trip outside of Madison.
- Go On A Boat Tour – A staple attraction in the Dells area is the Lower Dells Duck Tours, which take you down the Wisconsin River and lasts about an hour. Tickets range from free (for children three and under) to $24.51. However with a little bit of research online there are several coupons available and easy to find a good deal. Price: Free-$25.00
- Mini Golfing – The Wisconsin Dells has several unique put-putting courses to try out. At the Pirates Cove, located at the intersections of Highways 12-13-16-23, you can play 18 rounds of golf for less than $8.00 for adults, and even less when combined with a coupon (which again, there are tons of, even at the Pirates Cove website). Price: Less than $8.00
- Events and Attractions – There are constantly attractions coming through the Dells that are fun for all ages. One that stood out to if you are there this May 19th or 20th, is the Automotion event where you can learn about cars from some of the most knowledgeable in the industry. There will be more than 1,200 classic rides filling the premises at the Noah’s Ark Waterpark as well as live music and food. This is a free event and there are many more just like this taking place throughout the summer months! Price: Free
One of the great things about Wisconsin is that is it plentiful in its outdoors opportunities. The best part of that is that most of these types of activities are free! Go camping in one of the national parks and enjoy a weekend getaway of hiking, biking, camping, or bird watching!

Wisconsin is a great destination with something for just about everyone and at a reasonable price! Whether you are an adrenaline-seeker looking for the thrills of one of the Dell’s water parks, or looking for a scenic and relaxing getaway, Wisconsin is a great getaway when you are on a budget!
