Don’t miss your chance to grant wishes this summer for Make-A-Wish San Diego. If you’re an angler, one great opportunity for you to help them grant wishes is at the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge taking place Aug. 23-24 at the Silver Gate Yacht Club (2091 Shelter Island Drive, San Diego, Calif.) This annual favorite is Make-A-Wish San Diego’s biggest fundraiser as well as being the largest tuna fishing tournament in the continental United States. Since 1991 the event has raised over $3 million, and this year you can help make that number go up! Your participation will help Make-A-Wish San Diego grant wishes for local children facing critical illnesses, bringing them increased feelings of hope, strength and joy when they need it most.
Register Now To Claim Your Spot
Now is a great time to get a fishing team together and register your boat for the tournament. There are options to register for a charter boat or register your own private boat to participate. When registering, you can choose the number of anglers who will be on the boat. For an additional fee, registered boats can add additional side pots to their boat in order to be eligible to compete for a $500 cash prize. Learn all about this additional prize, head to the Tuna Challenge website.
Schedule Of Events
Leading up to the start date of the Tuna Challenge, there are a couple of tournament-related events that you can attend. Thursday, Aug. 7 is the Annual Tuna Fishing Seminar, an event open to the public. The seminar takes place at the same location as the tournament at the Silver Gate Yacht Club. Here the public will have the opportunity to learn all about the aspects of sport fishing from experts in the field.
Just before the tournament, there is the Captains’ Meeting, which also takes place at the Silver Gate Yacht Club. On Friday, Aug. 22 one team member from your boat must be present at the Captains’ Meeting. Starting at 4 p.m. team captains have the opportunity to pick up captains’ goody bags while the tournament registration is taking place. Starting at 4:30 food will be available for purchase, as well as an open bar. Starting at 6 p.m. the mandatory Captains’ Meeting will cover all the fishing rules and information.
Lines will be in the water starting at 5 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 when the tournament kicks off. Weigh-in for the fish caught goes from 4-10 p.m. on Saturday and from 7-9 a.m. on Sunday. All eligible fish must be weighed-in from the boat of entry by 9 a.m. at either the San Diego Marlin Club or the Dana Landing Market and Fuel Dock in Mission Bay. Visit the Tuna Challenge website for more information on the schedule of events.
The Fun Continues Sunday
Once the angling ends at 9 a.m. on Sunday, you can be sure that some of the event’s fun is just starting. The awards banquet begins at 10 a.m. and features an exciting Giant Mega Raffle as well as the opportunity to enter a raffle to win the grand prize: a 2014 Mazda3i Touring car! Note that the payment for car raffle tickets must be received on or before Aug. 15. All raffle information including ticket prices and addresses to mail your payment to is available on the Tuna Challenge website.
Sunday is also the tournament Awards Banquet, where you will see who made the biggest catch. Register for the event, and this could be you!
Your Boat Can Make Wishes Come True
Even if you don’t fish, there are still ways for you to support Make-A-Wish San Diego such as volunteering at the event, making a donation, sponsoring the event or participating in the raffle. If you have questions about the event, you can send an email to email@example.com.
Whether your boat will be out on the water for the tournament or it’s sitting unused in the driveway, it can help Make-A-Wish San Diego bring hope, strength and joy to children in San Diego. How can an old, unused boat make a difference? You can give it new life when you donate it to Wheels For Wishes, benefiting Make-A-Wish San Diego! When you donate your boat to Wheels For Wishes, we turn it into a wish for a child in your community by giving the proceeds to Make-A-Wish. If you never use your boat, turn it into so much more than a boat by calling 1-877-431-9474 or filling out an easy online donation form.
