After the last winter day melts away, it doesn’t take long to see how much trash got lost in the snow. That’s why from April 27-May 4, Alaskan cities are making a terrific effort to beautify their communities.

Anchorage Citywide Cleanup Week

April 27 marks the start of the 46th annual Citywide Cleanup Week, sponsored by the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce. The mission of the event is to remove unwanted trash from city streets, parks and neighborhoods. Last year’s event netted more than 1,500 tons of trash or more than 3 million pounds!

Everyone loves a clean city – especially the half-million visitors that come to the city according to the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau. During the week, Anchorage businesses, schools and families take to the streets to bring the city’s natural beauty back.

Here’s how to get involved:

  • Pick up your orange bags at any one of six locations around Anchorage.
  • All participants are responsible for transporting their trash. Check the regulations to learn how to dispose of your bags.
  • School-aged kids can take part in Super Sweeper through their schools. The program helps to teach kids the value of a clean city as well as community service.

Homer Clean Up on May 4

Not to be outdone, Homer on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, took in 1,338 bags of trash last year, 239 of which were recyclable materials. Now the quest is on to see if Homer residents can top last year’s impressive total.

Clean Out Your Garage
